Intuitive Eating, Made Easier
If you’re reading this, you’ve most likely felt stressed or confused about food at some point in your life. Whether it's from parents, friends, magazines or social media, we’re bombarded with messages about what’s “good” and “bad."
This inescapable diet culture makes eating more complicated than it should be. That’s why the concept of Intuitive Eating—an evidenced-based approach—has become popular. The idea was created by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995. They developed the ten principles that make up the “anti-diet” over the course of years in their practice. The program has been studied many times.
It emerged as a successful tool for those living with eating disorders, but has since become mainstream. After all, says Balanced Nutrition owner Natalie Loschiavo, “it’s pretty rare, unfortunately, to find anyone in our culture who has a truly peaceful and easy relationship with food. That doesn’t mean everyone has disordered eating, but most of us have absorbed messages that lead to rules around eating.”
The concept is pretty basic: “Intuitive eating is about removing food rules, understanding what your body needs and making choices from a place of care and connection, not fear or control,” says Loschiavo.
The similarities between Home Appétit's cooking philosophy and Intuitive Eating are notable. Our chefs start with whole and seasonal ingredients and cook everything from scratch with balance, taste and satisfaction in mind. Each week’s menu is designed to make eating well feel simple and enjoyable again. “When you give yourself permission to eat what you want, you usually realize you don’t want as much as you feared, because it’s no longer a big deal," says Loschiavo.
“One of the things I love most about Home Appétit is that there’s no calorie breakdown on the packaging,” says Loschiavo. “For many of our clients, that helps reduce stress and keeps them from choosing meals based on numbers instead of what sounds good.”
We recommend reading the Intuitive Eating book and booking a session with the experts at Balanced Nutrition to help you better understand and practice the lifestyle.
