H.A. Hang: Ann Phillips, owner of HiLo House
The coolest part of our business has always been our clients. We’re amazed by all they do: CEOs and business owners, world travelers, authors, inventors, healers, entrepreneurs, newscasters, artists, pro athletes, musicians, caretakers, and philanthropists.
We launched this series to share the stories of our clients and form connections within the H.A. community. Enjoy!

Home Appétit: You went from a middle school principal to a fitness studio owner. How did that happen?
Ann Phillips: My husband and I decided to sell our house and move into an apartment, and HiLo happened to be in the building. I immediately fell in love with the workouts and the community and became a regular. I began to train as a coach, while still working in education. Eventually, I decided to pursue a full-time career in fitness. I wasn’t quite sure what that was going to look like, possibly teaching at HiLo while starting my own personal training business. And then the previous owner asked me and my husband if we were interested in buying the studio from her. We decided to go for it and took over as owners in July 2024.
Did you grow up in Delaware?
I was born and raised in New Jersey and never thought I would leave, but then I met Bill. Life took us to Virginia and then to Delaware, where we've been for the past 10 years. He's the associate head coach for men’s basketball at the University of Delaware.
Why were you drawn to fitness?
It's always been part of who I am. I grew up playing basketball, soccer and lacrosse. Sports were never just about competition for me—it was about confidence, being a good teammate and learning what my body was capable of. I majored in health and physical education and spent 11 years teaching high school health and PE. I also coached middle and high school basketball, lacrosse, volleyball and tennis. It's hard to put into words how awesome coaching is and the feeling you get seeing your group of players work together, battle through tough times and learn what it takes to be successful.
What makes HiLo studios unique?
Every detail of the HiLo experience is designed to challenge your body while supporting it. Our teachers don’t just cue movements—they coach with purpose. Our community is everything. We believe progress happens faster and feels better when you are surrounded by people who want to see you succeed. We're the first and only Lagree and VersaClimber studio in Delaware and soon we will be able to say the same for Pennsylvania with our new location in Media!
What's your favorite part of running HiLo?
Watching people step outside of their comfort zones, build confidence and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. Creating an inclusive space where guests, coaches and guest success associates feel supported and seen.
What’s your five year plan?
As a company, our goal is to grow and expand HiLo in a thoughtful way. We're eyeing Philly for location number three. On a personal level, I’m committed to continuing my own growth alongside the brand. I’m working toward becoming a Lagree Master Trainer and staying deeply connected to both the Lagree and Versa methods.
What are some challenges and surprises about being a business owner?
It means wearing many hats every single day, often all at once, which is very similar to being a principal. There are long days, tough decisions, doubts, and moments where the weight feels heavy—but it's all worth it because this is my passion.
Do you have any secret talents?
Not many people know is that I can play the piano. I took lessons for more than 12 years growing up.
What are some of your favorite local businesses? Workout gear, food, etc?
I love Paiya athleisure in Wilmington because it's made for real movement and real life. I wear it all the time and it's a bit hit with our community. Coastal Alchemy is also great. I love our partnership with the owner Lindsay. Her events are so thoughtful. Bloom and Grow has these Positive Petals—single stem flowers with motivational notes. You can feel the heart that the owner, Kelly, pours into everything she does. Glimmer Gifts in Media is the cutest shop that recently opened. No matter how you need a gift for, you can find something meaningful! And we love the fresh juices from Nourish Cold Pressed Juice out of Kennett Square and Nourish Markets in Delaware. My favorites are the Philly Special juice and green goddess salad. Both keep me fueled.
